Top 5 Treatments
Acne sufferers do not necessarily need to resort to expensive cosmetics, inconvenient treatments and harsh products. What many do not realize is the answer could be right under their nose and in their fridge right now. People have used yogurt as an acne treatment for hundreds of years both by eating it and applying it to the affected skin.
How Yogurt Works
Not only is yogurt full of vitamins and minerals, it has many antibiotic qualities making it an excellent anti-acne treatment. When eating it, yogurt boosts the immune system by helping your body fight off the illnesses and bacteria that is at the root cause of acne. The active cultures in yogurt are called probiotics, and these allow the digestive system to function properly. This means the body can completely utilize the nutrients it absorbs, thus improving the fight against the toxins responsible for blemishes and promoting healthier skin.
When applying yogurt to your skin, it destroys the bacteria responsible for causing acne inside the pores, and because it is naturally acidic, it draws oil out from the surface of the skin. A yogurt acne treatment is particularly effective because it feeds your complexion numerous vitamins and minerals like zinc and vitamin B promoting healing. This is as opposed to harsher chemical treatments, which tend to strip the skin of these nutrients that are also important in the fight against acne.
How to Use Yogurt
A yogurt acne treatment should be applied just like a commercial face mask.
• Wash your face thoroughly with warm water and a mild cleanser to ensure the cleanest skin possible. Pat and dry.
• Apply one cup of plain yogurt with your fingers, covering all areas of your face and upper neck.
• Leave the face mask on for 15 to 20 minutes. Gently wash it away with warm water.
• Repeat the process daily or weekly as needed.
Yogurt's acne treatment benefits can be combined with other ingredients that lend even more benefits to the skin. If you're struggling with dry skin, add two tablespoons of grated carrots or one tablespoon of honey to the yogurt. Those with oily or dull skin should try adding two teaspoons of lemon juice to the yogurt mask to rid the skin of dead cells and clarify the pores.
Potential Side Effects
If a user notices a slight tingly feeling or experience burning or pain of any kind, wash off the mask and consult with a physician before reapplying. These symptoms may indicate an allergy or sensitivity to yogurt's active ingredients or live cultures. Test this out by applying yogurt to a small patch of skin before putting on the whole mask. If the skin feels tight after washing off your yogurt mask, apply a non-comedogenic moisturizer to hydrate and protect skin cells.
A yogurt acne treatment is cheaper and more convenient than most modern, commercial cosmetics. It also has the added benefits of nourishing the skin as opposed to stripping it. While some might need a more aggressive treatment, yogurt will definitely help and not harm in the fight against acne.
